Extruded products most commonly require a dryer. “When a product is made on an extruder there is usually moisture added during this cooking step in the form of steam or water to get the correct product appearance and cook level,” explains Galen Rokey, process technology director, Wenger Manufacturing, Sabetha, Kansas. “This moisture must then be removed for product shelf life. Typical extruded pet foods may contain 20% to 30% moisture prior to drying. Conveyor speeds within the dryer allow the proper bed depth and retention time. Drying temperatures are another operating parameter needed to reach a product moisture level between 6% and 8% as the product leaves the dryer.”

Conventional methodologies for sweat analysis involve collection using gauze pads taped to the skin, followed by chemical compositional determination using benchtop instruments. Although useful in laboratory and clinical contexts, these approaches cannot provide real-time information, and their accuracy is limited by loss, contamination, and degradation of samples during the multistep processes of collection, storage, transport, and analysis. Alternative strategies exploit body-worn sensors for real-time, on-skin analysis using electrochemical potentiometric and amperometric techniques (2, 20). These approaches, however, involve complex collections of hardware: potentiostats for signal generation, Bluetooth radios for data transmission, and rechargeable batteries for power supply. Because these subsystems are difficult to miniaturize, they dominate the overall form factor (12, 20, 31) in a way that leads to nonideal size and weight for mounting on the skin. In addition, potentiometric electrolytic sensors require preconditioning in standard solutions and calibration before use, commonly with challenges in uncontrolled drifts in signal (32). Potentiometric sensors that use wireless, battery-free electronics are promising as alternatives, but they can only sense electrolyte levels and fail to detect other physiologically relevant species such as metabolites, proteins, and drugs (33). Reported designs also have limited ability to accurately capture dynamic changes in sweat due to lack of controlled routing of freshly excreted sweat to the surfaces of the sensors. In this context, colorimetric sensors deployed in thin, soft microfluidic networks that guide and route sweat into compartmentalized microchambers optimally configured for measurement and readout are appealing (21). Although these systems have the additional advantage that they can capture well-defined volumes of sweat and quantify the sweat rate and total sweat loss, colorimetric reagents are available only for a modest set of sweat biomarkers.

So the question is not so much “Will this work?” as “How well will this work?” and “Is this the best dryer for my needs?” What distinguishes the various dryer designs most from one another is their relative performance and sophistication. But two other key factors are the cost and the time it takes to build them.

To measure the densities of their half of the weights, the Canadian scientists used a hydrostatic technique that involved weighing each artifact successively in fluids of different known densities.
