One of our favorite places to furniture shop is at an antiques store or an auction house—but how can you tell trash from a treasure?

9. Check the date  When it comes to date marks on foods, “use by” is a deadline and “best before” is a guideline. So, according to Dr Gordon, it’s important to consume meat products, prepared food and salads within the “use by” date. “And when pre-packaged foods are opened, the use-by date no longer applies and the product should be consumed within 2 or 3 days and by the original use-by date,” she adds. “‘Best before’ dates relate to the quality of food rather than safety and the ‘sell by’ dates are used by retailers for stock control purposes and shouldn’t be confused with ‘use by’ or ‘best before’ dates which are the ones to be aware of.”

Take strawberries. Placed in the refrigerator in their original container, strawberries often start to show mold in just a couple of days. If I put them into a container and vacuum out all of the air, they will last for at least two weeks in the refrigerator, remaining as fresh as the day I bought them.

Water bottles are huge space takers, and if you have a lot of them you should avoid keeping them in your cabinets at all cost—after all, you have more important things to put in there. Instead, stack your water bottles in this gadget, and keep it by the door so you don't forget to take one with you when you leave.

The products being tested vary from large structural elements of aircraft down to small electronic components such as microchips and circuit boards. “It’s mainly products for future deployment. If you catch an insect inside your home and want to know what it is, take the sample to the Door County UW-Extension office at 421 Nebraska St. in Sturgeon Bay. Medication bottles or small Tupperware containers work well for transporting insects without damaging them. If you can’t make it to our office right away, place the container in the freezer until you can make a visit.

It’s usually better to purchase from reputable nurseries with knowledgeable staff than from discount stores and big box chains. Unscrupulous retailers have been known to remove leaves from bare root plants so that they looked dormant when they aren’t. Emerging leaf buds or flowers mean that plants have come out of dormancy, and picking off their new growth robs the awakening plants of valuable energy.
